Getting haircut for guy?

I'm a guy with thick, wavy hair that like it's thinned out all over when I get it cut. However, I hate when they razor it or cut into it, I think it's called "chipping". If I tell them "thin it out all over with the thinning shears" the guy will know what I mean? Or do I have to say something else to get them to thin in out with the shears thing?
