He wants to " get to know me first" WTF help!!!!!!!?

Ok so there's this guy that I like and I went to formal with him last year bc he was too shy to ask me so I asked him and we had a great time! So This year I still like him even though he only thinks of me as a friend even though he told one of my friends he thought I was very attractive :) so I got my friend to ask him today if h liked me and he said he thought I was really nice and vey pretty but he wanted to get to know me first b4 he dated me?! He knows pretty much everything about me since we spent every waking day together after formal bc we had cross country practice together everyday and we talked everyday! I don't get it what else does he wanna know??? Please help!
